Wrapping up Sat@Once
Sat@Once will send its last package of
free Internet contents next Wednesday February 14, 2007, after almost 5
full years of free operation for the Satellite Internet community (we
started operations on 11 March 2002 with Casablanca version 1.2).
Many thanks to ASTRA for having given this much satellite capacity for
the benefits of the users. Many thanks to ESA for having co-funded the
project. Many thanks to all our partners who created mirror download
web sites, support forums and who participated in this project during
this past 5 years (an eternity in Internet time). Many thanks for the
200.000 + persons who downloaded a copy of the software from the
official web site of CSP, not counting the unofficial mirror sites.
Why is Sat@Once stopped?
The purpose of Sat@Once was to prove the
interest of using the satellite to do webcasting of a set of most
popular Internet web contents to a multitude of users, filtered to suit
individual topics of interests. On this respect, Sat@Once is one of the
most successful projects co-funded by ASTRA and ESA.
With the advent of Windows VISTA, of Internet Explorer 7, of Firefox 2,
it is becoming too difficult for a small development team to follow the
changes. Therefore, we prefer to stop the service rather than provide a
bad service.
Eventually Sat@Once needs to be followed up by professional
broadcasters, commercial or public. It is not the mission of Sat@Once
to continue forever.
Is somebody taking over the service in Europe?
We will continue to make the Casablanca technology available to all satellite operators in the world.
From the feedback, it appears that the interest is highest in countries
without solid terrestrial infrastructure. Casablanca shines when doing
podcasting because the same rich content can reach millions of users
simultaneously without any terrestrial lines. However, in Europe, major
podcasters have invested heavily in classical servers for classical
distribution and cannot change overnight to another technology before
they have proven their existing investment.
If you want Sat@once to continue, maybe with another operator, please
feel free to lobby your preferred podcaster, for example your national
TV channels who is already used to send over ASTRA.

Nach fast 5 Jahren
freier Internet Nutzung für die Satelliten Internet Gemeinschaft
(wir starteten den Dienst am 11. März 2002 mit der Casablanca
Version 1.2) wird Sat@Once am nächsten Mittwoch, den 14. Februar
2007 das letzte Paket freien Internet Content zur Verfügung
stellen.Wir bedanken uns bei ASTRA für die bereitgestellte
Satellitenkapazität zu Gunsten unserer Nutzer ebenso wie bei der
ESA für die Mitfinanzierung des Projektes. Unser Dank gilt
ebenfalls all unseren Partnern, welche die Mirror Download Websites
sowie Hilfsforen erstellt und an diesem Projekt während der
vergangenen 5 Jahre teilgenommen habe (eine Ewigkeit im
Internetzeitalter). Vielen Dank auch an die über 20000 Personen,
die die Sofware Kopien von der offiziellen Website der CSP herunter
geladen haben, abgesehen von den zahllosen inoffiziellen Mirror Sites.
Warum wird das Sat@Once Projekt gestoppt?
Der Grund für die Erstellung von Sat@Once war die Prüfung des
Interesses einer Vielzahl von Nutzern bzgl. der Benutzung von
Satellitenkapazität zum Webcasting einer Reihe der
interessantesten Webinhalte, welche zum Zweck der individuellen
Ansprüche gefiltert wurden. In dieser Hinsicht ist Sat@Once einer
der erfolgreichsten von ASTRA & ESA unterstützten
Projekte.Durch das Erscheinen von Windows VISTA, Internet Explorer 7
und Firefox 2 wird es für ein kleines Team zu kompliziert den
geänderten Anforderungen zu folgen. Aus diesem Grund ziehen wir es
vor den Service ganz zu stoppen anstatt einen schlechten Service zu
bieten. Schlussendlich wird es notwendig sein, dass Sat@Once von
professionellen Rundfunkstationen, kommerzieller oder privater Art
weiterverfolgt wird. Es ist nicht vorgesehen dass Sat@Once für
immer existiert.
Wird jemand den Service in Europa übernehmen?
Wir werden die Casablanca Technologie weiterhin den Satelliten-Betreibern Weltweit zur Verfügung stellen.
Die Nachfrage zeigt, dass das Interesse in den Ländern mit schwach
ausgebauter Landesinfrastruktur am stärksten ist. In Bezug auf
Podcasting ist Casablanca eine hervorragende Möglichkeit, da
umfassende Inhalte Millionen von Nutzern ohne terrestrische Verbindung
gleichzeitig erreichen kann. In Europa haben jedoch grosse Podcaster
sehr viel in klassische Server für klassische Verteilung
investiert und können nicht über Nacht zu einer anderen
Technologie wechseln ohne ihre aktuellen Investitionen zu prüfen.
Wenn Sie weiterhin mit Sat@Once fortfahren möchten, schlagen wir
vor, dass Sie Ihren bevorzugten Podcaster – z.B. Ihre nationalen
TV Anbieter, die bereits diesen Service über ASTRA genutzt haben -
dbzgl. zu beeinflussen.

il suo ultimo package di contenuti Internet gratuiti il prossimo
mercoledì 14 febbraio 2007, dopo quasi 5 anni di funzionamento
quotidiano gratuito per la comunità di Internet satellitare
(abbiamo iniziato a trasmettere l'11 marzo 2002 con Casablanca versione
1.2).
Grazie infinite ad ASTRA per aver dato così tanta
potenzialità satellitare a beneficio degli utenti. Grazie
infinite ad ESA per aver co-finanziato il progetto. Grazie infinite a
tutti i nostri partner che hanno creato siti web mirror per il
download, forum di supporto e che hanno partecipato a questo progetto
negli ultimi 5 anni (un'eternità per i tempi di Internet).
Grazie infinite alle 200.000 + persone che hanno scaricato una copia
del software dal sito web ufficiale di CSP, senza contare i download
dai siti mirror non ufficiali.
Perchè si ferma Sat@Once?
L'obiettivo di Sat@Once
era quello di dimostrare l'interesse nell'utilizzo del satellite per
inviare in webcasting un insieme dei contenuti Internet più
popolari ad una moltitudine di utenti, contenuti filtrati per adattarsi
agli argomenti di interesse individuale. Da questo punto di vista,
Sat@Once è stato uno dei progetti meglio riusciti tra quelli
co-finanziati da SES-ASTRA ed ESA.
Ciò nonostante con l'avvento di Windows VISTA, di Internet
Explorer 7, di Firefox 2, sta diventando troppo difficile per un
piccolo gruppo di sviluppo seguire tutti i cambiamenti. E' per questa
ragione che preferiamo fermare il servizio piuttosto che fornirne uno
pessimo.
Può darsi che Sat@Once venga ripreso da broadcaster
professionisti, commerciali o pubblici. Non è la missione di
Sat@Once durare per sempre.
Qualcuno in Europa rileverà il servizio?
Noi continueremo a rendere disponibile la tecnologia Casablanca per tutti gli operatori satellitari nel mondo.
Dal feedback avuto finora, pare che l'interesse sia superiore nei paesi
privi di infrastrutture terrestri solide. Casablanca eccelle nel
servizio di podcasting perchè lo stesso contenuto sostanzioso
può raggiungere milioni di utenti simultaneamente senza bisogno
di alcuna linea terrestre. Tuttavia, in Europa, i principali podcaster
hanno investito pesantemente nei server classici in vista di una
distribuzione classica e non possono cambiare dall'oggi al domani verso
un'altra tecnologia prima di aver comprovato il loro investimento
esistente.
Se volete che Sat@Once abbia un seguito, forse con un altro operatore,
non esitate a farlo sapere al vostro podcaster preferito.

Sat@Once émettra
son dernier fichier CAB de contenu Internet gratuits mercredi prochain
le 14 février 2007, après presque 5 années pleines
de service gratuit pour la communauté des usagers de Internet
par Satellite (nous avons commencé à émettre le 11
mars 2002 avec Casablanca version 1.2).
Merci infiniment à SES ASTRA pour avoir fourni tant de
capacité satellite au bénéfice des utilisateurs.
Merci infiniment à ESA pour avoir co-financé le projet.
Merci infiniment à tous nos partenaires qui ont
créé des sites de téléchargement miroirs,
des forums d'aide et qui ont participé à ce projet durant
les 5 dernières années (une éternité dans
le monde Internet). Merci infiniment enfin aux 200.000+ personnes qui
ont téléchargé une copie du logiciel depuis le
site officiel du CSP, et encore plus si on compte les sites
non-officiels de distribution.
Pourquoi Sat@Once s'arrête-t-il?
L'objectif de Sat@Once
était de prouver l'intérêt du satellite pour
envoyer en webcasting un ensemble de pages web et de contenus Internet
à une multitude d'utilisateurs, contenus filtrés de
manière individuelle selon les centres d'intérêt.
Sur ce point, Sat@Once a été un des projects les plus
réussis parmi ceux co-financés par SES ASTRA et ESA.
Cependant avec la venue de Windows VISTA, de Internet Explorer 7, de
Firefox 2, cela commence à devenir difficile pour une petite
structure de suivre tous les changements. Pour cette raison, nous avons
préféré d'arrêter le service plutôt
que le laisser se dégrader.
Il est possible que Sat@Once soit repris par un ou plusieurs diffuseurs
soit comemrciaux soit institutionnels dont c'est la profession. ce
n'est pas la mission de Sat@Once de continuer indéfiniment.
Y a-t-il un successeur prévu pour le service en Europe?
La technologie Casablanca reste disponible pour les opérateurs satellites du monde entier.
D'après les premiers contacts, il semble que
l'intérêt en est plus grand dans les pays sans une solide
infrastructure terrestre. Casablanca excelle avec le podcasting car il
envoie le même contenu riche à des millions d'utilisateurs
simultanément sans nécessiter le lien terrestre.
Cependant, en Europe, les podcasters les plus importants ont investi
lourdement dans des serveurs classiques en vue d'une distribution
classique et ne peuvent pas changer du jour au lendemain pour une autre
technologie avant d'avoir fait la preuve des investissements en cours.
Si vous voulez que Sat@once continue, même sous un autre
opérateur, n'hésitez pas à le faire savoir
à votre podcaster préféré, par exemple
votre chaine de télévision nationale qui opère
déjà avec ASTRA.
